Winter is a dreamy time for audiences of all ages to burrow into the movie theater, and this year the Childish Film Festival comes to the Northwest Film Forum for the dark months, when the cinema is the most inviting. Join the NWFF for a wide array of non-commercial films and videos, found mostly via a growing international children's film festival circuit. With a smorgasbord of animation, live-action, fiction, nonfiction, shorts, and features, the Childish Film Festival promises again to take Seattle youngsters (and the adults that accompany them) on an adventurous journey into new cinematic territories.

THE CAT AND THE CLOWN (Vanessa Briggs, Seattle, WA, 2005, 10 min) Written by Seattle kids Ivy Girdwood and Zephyr Aleta, this film tells us about a great friendship between a cat and a clown who go on a honeymoon with their dinosaur pet. Made with a super-8 camera and live-action silhouettes.
OPEN A DOOR IN TAIWAN (Wen Cheng, Taiwan, Beta SP, 6 min) A suspenseful action story about a young boy who must rescue a lost puppet for his grandfather's famous puppet theatre.
YOLANDA: OPEN A DOOR IN SOUTH AFRICA (Wendy Hardie, UK, Beta, 2003, 5 min) Little Yolanda chases a "galimoto", a toy car made of found wires, through her village and into a neighbor, causing a big mess.
THE GREAT BALL GAME (Andrew Horne, US/Canada, 2003, Beta, 6 min) A Native American legend about the intricacies of inter-species tolerance and the role of games using cut-out paper animation.
ALPHABET PAM (Eva Saks, US, 2003, 16mm>DVD, 3 min) Alphabet Pam has a passion for "P" and pizza made at the Little Italy Pizzeria and Deli in Manhattan.
ALPHABET ZELDA (Eva Saks, US, 2003, 16mm>DVD, 4 min) Help Alphabet Zelda find a "Z". Another superbly made live-action short made for kids by Eva Saks (her Colorforms and Confection films played at the 2003 Childish Film Festival).
TWO OF A KIND (Eva Saks, US, 2004,16mm>DVD, 2 min) A fable about friendship. Zora is lonely because people think her clothes are funny. Then she finds a special friend.
YOKO! JAKAMOTO! TOTO! (Tony Collingwood & Andrea Tan, UK, 2002, Beta, 10 min) Two animated shorts, "The Babysitters," and, "The Rival," featuring the cartoon antics of an aardvark, a monkey, and a bird.
JIM�S WINTER (Gun Jacobson, Sweden/English Subtitles, 2003, 35mm, 14 min) A beautifully animated gentle tale about a grasshopper's winter journey into the city. After meeting new friends he earns a living by playing violin.

RENT'S DUE (Andy McCone, Seattle, WA, 2004, DV, 8 min) A black and white silent slapstick comedy about a model 1940's community living in Laundromat dryers.
THE CIRCUS STORY (Yong Choe, US, 2003, Beta, 3 min) Remember the "Wild Man from Borneo" who tore the head off a chicken and drank its blood? A fond and amusing recollection of the old days at the circus accompanied by colorfully hand painted and illustrated animation.
LOSING FACE (Sebastian Danta, Australia, 2003, Beta, 3 min) A funny clay-mated guy loses composure during a bad day at work.
Rent's Due, a film by Andy McCone MBOUTOUKOU (Victor Viyuoh, Cameroon, 2002, Beta, 14 min) Napo is a young boy desperate to grow up and be recognized by his family. In order to prove that he is not a child anymore he collect termites as a birthday present for his mother.
FISHERBOY (Bob Stenhouse, New Zealand, 2002, Beta, 7 min) A very contemporary computer animated piece adapted from a very old Japanese folk tale. FISHERBOY explains the movement of the tides and the moon, set in New Zealand.
LA TOILETTA (Dave Goldenberg, USA, 2002, Beta, 8 min) Presented as an operetta, this short film tells of an epic struggle involving a fifth grade boy who is desperately got to use the facilities.
TRANSFIXED (Jason Britski, Nova Scotia, Canada, 2002, 16mm>DVD, 2 min) An experimental film about a young boy who discovers the breeze from the car window on a beautiful day, and is transfixed by the sensation.
HOUDINI'S HOUND (Sara Johnsen, Norway/English Subtitles, 2002, 35mm, 12 min) A very suspenseful tale about Fredrik who tries to impress his cousin Klara at the beach with a Houdini trick that goes awry.
THE FREAK (AristoMenis Tsirbas, USA, 2002, 35mm, 7 min) A fun-loving, freaky futuristic creature visits a strangely animated Earth. Initially he puts people off with his odd mannerisms and style, but his charisma finally prevails.

The gifted story-telling and multi-textured styles of animation make these works finely entertaining for all ages. SWEET STORY is a beautiful parable told in cut-out silhouette animation about a woodcutter who rescues a wounded crane. COMPANION is a claymated story of two brothers in the desert racing to build their castle in the sand. SHANGOUL AND MANGOUL is made with traditional textiles and music and tells a rural animal tale. And in the award-winning puppet animation film, BAHADOR, mice rebel and expose the corruption and deception of an evil king.

A fantastic tale featuring fantastical creatures. The rowdy, terrible, beastly rolley tribe adventure to conquer a new territory. An elf village deep in the woods flees from the approaching tribe and hide while the rolleys take over their village. A brave elf girl, Milli, encounters a sensitive Rolli and they become friends despite tribal disapproval. Together they must endure funny and exciting tests of strength between good and evil, friendship and enmity, until all the creatures of the forest-beasts, fairies, rolleys, and elves�learn to live peacefully with one another. In Finnish with English Subtitles.
Winner of 3 national JUSSI-awards in Finland for Best Set Design, Best Costume Design and Best Director of Photography.

Tibbe is a shy journalist in danger of losing his job, until he meets Miss Minoes. Minoes is a lady with many strange characteristics-she can speak to cats, her favorite food is raw fish, and she prowls around the trees and roofs of the small Dutch city. This fast paced feline fairy tale is full of magic and mysteries, action and adventure. As the dutch say, "Miaou!" Recommended for ages 5 and up. Dubbed in English.
