THE KING AND THE MOCKINGBIRD
LE ROI ET L'OISEAU
(Paul Grimault, 35mm, France/English Dub, 1979, 83 min.)
Presented by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy
All cinema buffs, as well as children, should visit this adapted Andersen tale about a plucky Mockingbird who must defend his little ones from the tyranny of an absurdly vain King. Set in a surrealistic castle with a mythic stone robot, LE ROI ET L'OISEAU, was a major influence on Miyazake (CASTLE IN THE SKY). This lavishly animated classic, widely regarded as one of the finest animated features in cinema history, is the culmination of the legendary collaboration between animator Paul Grimault and screenwriter Jacques Prvert. Originally made in 1949, LE ROI has the look and feel of animation from that period, but contains modern insights.
